Nearly forgot Wip Wednesday!

I've got a couple of new people around since last time, I think, so as a refresher: Give me a word and I'll try to find it in my wips. If I do find it, I post an excerpt that includes it. If I don't find it (or if I do but the whim takes me), I have to write something using it-- but that something has to be part of a current wip, not something entirely new.

Last week, I got "reverse" as a prompt. I had sort of intended to write something to continue the last wip I posted but never got around to it. I do have one wip that uses it, though, so here's that excerpt:

Well, I was still nauseated when I woke up, enough so that I ended up calling out. I don't love to lose the PTO, especially with the weather situation still kinda touch and go, but I figured better safe than sorry. It's definitely just sinuses but if I ended up puking, which I felt at the time like I might, they only would've sent me home anyway. At least this I saved the cost of rides back and forth for the day.

Oh, yeah, did I tell you guys that I forgot to switch my default payment method for my ride apps, so I was overdrawing my account at least once a day for over a week? Over three hundred dollars in overdraft fees alone. Not a great look for me. I'm almost-- almost-- glad the weather stopped me from going out and potentially spending even more.

Two mutant ladies... and dinos?

"Sugah, did you have a moment?" Rogue asked, looking ahead at the pack of grazing dinosaurs. Wanda shook her head to try and clear it, and decided that was definitely a valid question from her friend.

"I don't think I did?"

"It's not the Savage Land," Rogue said, after testing all her senses against this island they'd crashed on.

"So some mad scientist bought an island for cloning? Those don't look like the newer pictures of what dinosaurs are supposed to look like, after all."

"Well, before we find their hunting kind, let's get the comms back."

"Good plan, Rogue."

We got shuffled around at work again. That is a royal we, thankfully; I didn't have to move or do anything. But one person each from my office and the offices on either side of me have been moved. The girl who's been helping with my cases is sharing the space with me now. Which, y'know, makes sense. Though it is a bit frustrating to remember that the two of us are the least experienced as far as accessioning specimens is concerned. At least that's neither of our main responsibility.

Turns out we might get snow after the rain. And they keep changing the temperature predictions, so Idek how much freezing vs melting we're looking at. I'm not sure what the roads'll be like anyway, considering the treatments they did will be so watered down. School's already been called out for tomorrow. I don't expect it to affect work at all, more's the pity.

My biggest beef with the weather right now is that I'm pretty sure that it's giving me a headache. My sinuses are trying to kill me and I'm nauseated besides. Felt better for a bit, now it's getting bad again. Here's hoping it's all cleared up by morning.

Well, as expected, work opened as usual today. And, I mean, I can kinda see why. It ended up being a pretty normal day, even kinda on the busy side. Not for me, granted, I got my stuff late because only two of the lab folks showed up, but still. Once I did get it, I was occupied for the rest of the day.

The main roads aren't bad at all. I still don't think the doctors should've chosen to put the people who come in by back roads in that position but I can see why it didn't strike them as dangerous. My hill wasn't even that bad this morning and it was pretty clear when I got home. I'm still a little worried about it icing over since we're expecting rain and then more freezing temps but I'm not as worried as I was.

In honor of the various Femslash events that popped up this February, I figured I'd go with the theme for the pairings prompts. :D I picked two of my favorites.

Managed to finish my [community profile] smallfandomfest prompt early this morning (only 2 hours late...).

Signed up for the Fresh Femslash Salad Bar, figured I'd try my hand at it. If anyone has a particular femslash pairing they want to see (and you know I ship it or just ask, you never know - I haven't finished updating that list), feel free to request a pairing. I'm not quite sure what pairings I'll do, but that would be helpful to narrow it down.

Week 1 of the DCU Femslash February Comment Fest has started which is focused on drabble/short form, angst, and/or rarepair.

Wrote up a post at [community profile] supergirl_tv about current challenges/events happening, feel free to let me know if I missed any. I'm going to try do that monthly, but who knows.

Also did a "First Kiss" prompt at basically all my communities that I run.

Finished my Hunting Party icons for [community profile] tvmovie20in20 - shockingly early! I of course had to use Nick Wechsler's character Oliver for the "Space" prompt in honor of the first role I knew him from Kyle from Roswell. I used also a lot more textures than I normally do with this set so hopefully they turned out ok. XD Seriously if anyone starts watching the show and enjoys it, please let me know! It's a really small fandom so the more the merrier.

Didn't hear anything from work today, so I'm guessing we'll be starting as normal tomorrow. I'm sort of surprised, since we got that delay last week when the roads were treated and the storm ended up not amounting to much. Granted, I'm not sure what the roads look like now.

Honestly, it doesn't seem to be that bad out. It's cold, yeah, but there's not a whole lot of ice and the snow has some reasonable traction. People have been coming and going a bit, too, though it might just be the people with snow tires and/or four-wheel. Fingers crossed I don't have any trouble getting a ride tomorrow.

And then a few years passed...

Closing Up Shop: Seacouver

While Connor and Duncan were being themselves, Rachel was a little out of sorts. Tessa was a nice lady, one so recently brought into knowing what they were. However, Tessa was an artist, and driven currently by a piece that Rachel could already see would be lovely. The boy Richie was a little rash and Rachel didn't fully feel a connection to him yet, but she would work on that, after Connor explained why Duncan and Tessa were watching over him.

No, she just needed to be mindful of her own wishes and need to stretch her legs currently. Dinner could be for socializing. Right now, she had sights to see, stores to discover, and a need to be away from the casual masculinity contests the pair of cousins indulged themselves in during these infrequent reunions.

That in mind, Rachel turned her steps to a brisk walk in the same district the couple lived and worked in, ducking into shops as they caught her idea, pausing to sample the food about midmorning, and slowly circling back around.

A bookstore caught her eye, and she slipped within to browse, hopeful of something to keep her entertained until Connor decided they had played the game of risk long enough in this reunion.

She glanced over to the only other person present —

— and was thrown back to a lovely day spent with a kind young man.

She had not survived for so long as Connor's daughter and self-appointed protector from the world at large to give away her suspicion of the man's convenient location so near to Duncan when he had appeared in her life so close to the changing tides in Connor's own life. For half a moment, she almost wished Brenda had not decided Connor was too overwhelming, that it had been his wife on this trip instead of herself.

But she had never been a coward, and understood perfectly well why Connor and Brenda were separated now. She could — would — handle this meeting now upon her.

"Stepped away from your photography in favor of book collections, Mister Dawson?" she asked in a charming voice, letting her smile reflect the surprise of seeing a man of her past so far from where they had met.

"Miss Ellenstein, what a surprise." He stood, using the cane to do so, and Rachel added more details to the picture she was building. He was noticeably older, as she herself was, the reliance on the cane a bit more pronounced, but his smile was still making his face light up with disarming sincerity.

Who was Joe Dawson, that he was mortal and yet so close to the lives of those like her Connor?

"Also, the books are less finicky about lighting and framing," he added as he walked over to her. "Looking for anything of particular interest?"

"Browsing, actually, passing the time. It's an eclectic neighborhood, it seems."

"You could say that," Joe agreed. "If anything catches your eye, I am always up to negotiate with an astute antiquities dealer such as yourself."

That he was firmly the center of her attention was not something she betrayed, only smiling and moving on to browse.

"Perhaps we could find the dessert we had no room for in New York?" she offered as he was moving back to the table he'd been working from.

"I can think of nothing better for this evening."

Connor would tell her she was playing with fire, when there was something so far amiss. Rachel preferred to see it as gathering intelligence on potential flashpoints.

Rachel passed the first part of the meal with Joe in conversation about what she had seen, and he offered ideas of new places to visit while she was in town. As she played the tourist, she considered just how to go about learning why he was here, so close to Connor's cousin after she'd met him in the aftermath of Connor's endgame against the Kurgan.

As the dessert course was delivered, Rachel glanced over and caught Joe studying her. He gave the smile and bashful look for being caught, and she found herself responding to that on a level she deemed dangerous.

Not necessarily in a physical danger sense, but to Connor's safety, and that of Duncan and his chosen family, she decided firmly.

"I had the impression you were more easterly in your setting, when we first met," Rachel said, giving him the faintest smile.

"Better opportunities out this way for me." He took a bite, chased it with the wine, and then shifted his body language a little. Rachel wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but it put her more on guard. "What about you? No more restoration and purchasing of antiquities?"

"Here and there, but more by appointment with travel benefits." Rachel tried her own tiramisu, decided she could name three places that served better, and sipped her coffee to wash it down. "Retirement allows me more opportunities in many ways, to keep an eye on my interests."

"Most people choose to turn their attention to new things when they let go of their old lives," Joe mused. "I suppose there's exceptions to anything that could be normal about humans, though."

"I find it is a good life, to keep an eye on those people or events that stand out," she answered. "After all, even those of us that prefer to live life a day at a time might be caught up in extraordinary events."

Had that been a shading of his eyes, something in memory haunting him now? Did he have a person like Connor that had saved him, and that was how he was connected? It couldn't be Duncan; she'd mentioned stopping in the book shop and making this date in his hearing without a single spike of interest.

And Duncan, for all he was a veteran of his years, still had difficulty masking himself.

"To observe something is to change it, or be changed by it," Joe pointed out. "Getting caught up in the ways and lives of the unusual ones can be a difficult thing."

"I am certain that is so, but I learned as a child that just standing by doesn't keep you any safer, or those you care about," she said softly. "Which may be why I took to the antiquities so easily. Every object holds some story, if you can just trace the history of it. People can be much the same."

"Very true," Joe said, giving the faint smile and change of body posture to move the conversation away from this.

Who was the one for Joe? And was Joe scouting others to mark targets, or warn of danger? Rachel rather hoped it was the latter, as she asked his opinion of a local museum, letting the double-layered words drop for now.

"Have a good night?" Connor asked as he took her jacket from her.

"Waiting up for me?" Rachel retorted, before leaning in to kiss his cheek.

"Maybe."

"Yes."

He smiled, his eyes crinkling up as that little catching laugh came out, before he offered for her to precede him into the sitting room. She settled in a chair, listening, but it seemed Duncan and Tessa must be out from the quiet. She still wasn't certain if Richie actually lived here or was just in and out.

"I think he knows someone like you, but I also don't think he's a danger," Rachel said, meeting Connor's eyes.

"Then… I'll warn Duncan that he's been seen near us before, and hopefully my little cousin can be a sensible man about the risks he takes."

"Hmm, he's as much a MacLeod as you," she pointed out, getting a warm laugh in response.

"Hey, I can dream!" Connor rebutted. "We are still flying out tomorrow."

Rachel nodded. "For the best." She would also hope this did not cause Duncan new grief in the long run, but her duty was to Connor… even if Connor saw it the other way around.

Last personal curriculum accountability post of the month! I wish I could say that I'm ending on a high note but alas. My brain has not been braining for the past week. I've barely stuck to the schedules I was so glad to have gotten figured out. I'm inclined to blame the weather but that doesn't do anything for my results.

We're actually getting some snow for this weekend. Just flurries so far but they've been falling steadily for hours and there's a fair bit of accumulation. If the forecasts called it right this time, this should go on right through Sunday morning. We'll see about that, of course.

Temperatures are expected to be in the single digits for the next few days and we're supposed to get winds below zero. Not looking forward to that. I'm also concerned about ice on the roads again. They did a good job prepping everything last weekend but apparently they were a little overzealous and used up most of the supply, which is, y'know, not great. I was hoping that if we did get snow, there'd be less to worry about because of the lack of rain. Unfortunately, the first hour or so of snowfall came when it was still just warm enough to melt, so we'll probably get a lot of black ice even if it's nothing very thick. On the bright side, I've got nowhere to go this weekend.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

... Is it really the end of January? Huh. Alright then!

Anyhow, Snowflake went very well for me! Its structure gave me the jumping-off points I needed some days in order to find something to post about. I also felt very encouraged to fandom-post and more generally to share my thoughts on topics I normally wouldn't have felt I had anything interesting enough to say about. I've enjoyed answering all the prompts, even those I didn't vibe with as much. In a way, especially those I didn't vibe with as much, since they made me think outside my usual boxes. I even made notes for future posts based on some prompts, including the aforementioned, and how I could've answered them differently.

My main goal for the challenge was to answer all of the prompts-- which I did! Yay for me! I am, unfortunately, behind on my secondary goal of reading and responding to other participants' posts but I'll get around to that in the next couple of days. It was clashing with my "less screen time" and "fewer browser tabs" resolutions and so I needed to take a step back. I'm looking forward to getting caught up, though!
